News Corp Calls Out Google on Piracy

News Corp. COO Peter Chernin thinks Google “could do a better job” of preventing pirated video from appearing on YouTube according to statements the executive made to the Financial Times. Of course, the comments come as Chernin’s company prepares to launch its joint venture with NBC Universal later this month to make the their professionally produced video available online.

Chernin also added: "YouTube could do a much more aggressive job about taking down content that is a copyright violator. It's pretty safe to say that they [Google] have the technology available ... it's publicly available and I haven't yet heard a lot about Google being technologically constrained."

News Corp is currently playing both sides of the fence in terms of their partnerships. While they plan to launch a video venture with NBC Universal, they also have a large search deal with YouTube parent company Google for MySpace. So, while Chernin can criticize YouTube for its laissez-faire policies towards removing copyright content, at the end of the day he might not want to bite too hard on the hand that feeds him.

Last month, the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) submitted a report to Congress detailing their more than 300 copyright violations they found on Google Video.
