Niagara Falls attracts millions of visitors each year in to gaze at the stupendous force of nature. Simply staring is sufficient for most.

But for Will Gadd, 47 (a.k.a. National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year), looking at the massive waterfalls just wasn't enough.

Gadd climbed 140 feet up the ice formations that line the sides of the falls to the top of Terrapin Point on Tuesday; he is the first person to actually climb up the falls, according to Red Bull, which sponsored the climb.

Gadd worked with the New York State Park Police to ensure that there would be no damage to the Falls.

A day prior to his climb, Gadd surveyed his route and broke off any hanging ice that could be dangerous. "I was taking off pieces the size of small cars," he said.

Gadd climbed the Falls a total of three times, which took approximately an hour each time. "At the end of the day I was hypothermic," he said.
