Nintendo's 2DS is now one of the cheapest options around for high-end gaming on the go.

The meant-for-kids handheld now sells for $99.99, a $30 markdown from its previous $129.99 price tag. In addition to the 2DS, the package also includes a copy of Mario Kart 7. Just don't run to buy one quite yet; the price change goes into effect on Aug. 30.

Nintendo released the 2DS in 2013 as a cheaper alternative to the popular 3DS. It maintains its sibling handheld's dual screen layout and supports all the same games, but with a wedge-shaped, non-foldable form factor and zero 3D capabilities.

The 2DS was (and still is) specifically aimed at younger folks. The 3DS comes with a warning that children under the age of 7 shouldn't play with 3D enabled, due to the risk of vision damage. In addition to its chunkier, less portable form factor, the 2DS also skirts around parental concerns by removing the feature completely.

It may not be for everyone -- a lot of handheld gamers appreciate the portability of a 3DS -- but we've found the 2DS to be a cost-friendly alternative (now more than ever) that makes only a few concessions while sticking to what's important: support for all the games.
