Nvidia Demos New 'DirectStylus' for Tegra 4 Tablets

Nvidia has unveiled a new fine-tip stylus for Tegra 4-based tablets that is low-cost and functions similarly to natural writing.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang demonstrated the company's DirectStylus technology at computer trade show Computex in Taipei, Taiwan, on Tuesday. The stylus works with the Tegra 4's image-processing power to figure out the difference between the stylus, its eraser, your finger and palm, according to Nvidia. That means the stylus purportedly operates as naturally as a pencil: one side writes and the other side erases.

DirectStylus is supposed to write smoothly, since it can scan detailed movement as you move across a tablet screen. Nvidia says the stylus works with technology that "supports up to 300 scans a second (five times the typical 60Hz touch scan rate)."

What's notable about DirectStylus is that it can draw lines of different widths, depending on how much pressure is put on the screen. This is something Nvidia says is especially useful in Asian markets, since drawing certain characters involves line strokes of different widths. Huang demonstrated that ability at Computex by writing his name using Chinese characters (pictured above).

What do you think about Nvidia DirectStylus technology? Would you like something like this for your tablet computing or do you prefer other stylus types? Or no stylus? Let us know in the comments.
