Pandora Remains Blocked to International Users

Internet radio service Pandora doesn't have any good news for international users yet, five months after being forced to shut off the site to non-US members. According to the company, the royalties that are required to be paid to artists and their labels in the UK and elsewhere make providing an ad-support web radio service infeasible.

Pandora founder Tim Westergren writes:

"As it stands now, there is still no affordable license for a webcaster to stream legally (ie. abiding by all standing copyright law and properly compensating performers and composers) anywhere outside the US."

However, the company remains committed to trying to find a solution, with one of their executives working full-time out of London. Meanwhile, the licensing situation remains dicey in the US for online radio, with Congress temporarily opting to not implement new royalty rates that could crush the industry.
