Sony to Launch PS4 Companion App in November

The Sony PlayStation 4 will get its own companion app for iOS and Android devices when the console launches in November, rivaling Microsoft's SmartGlass experience for the Xbox One, the company announced Thursday.

The PS4 app will act as a second screen for the console. It will display relevant information about games and add social integration to Facebook and Twitter. It will also allow users to watch their friends stream their PS4 games.

The app can play older PlayStation Mobile games, too.

Sony mentioned the app during its PlayStation 4 launch event in February, but didn't release more details until Thursday's presentation at the Tokyo Game Show.

Xbox announced its SmartGlass app in 2012 and it saw some integration onto games and television apps, like HBO Go. The Xbox One experience with SmartGlass will be more robust, as Microsoft demonstrated several games and apps that would utilize the service for everything from additional content to watching replays of your friends' best game performances.

Some major third-party releases will have their own cross-platform apps to enhance the gaming experience, like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

The PlayStation 4 will be available in North America on Nov. 15, in Europe on Nov. 22 and in Japan in Feb. 22 of next year.
