Sunday night marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the the Jewish New Year. This important holiday starts with blowing the shofar and eating apples dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet new year.
Of course, apples dipped in honey is so old testament.
There are plenty of ways to zhuzh up your Rosh Hashanah table. From burgers and fries to handheld pies, here are some of the most mouthwatering iterations of apples and honey from around the web.
Don't miss Mashable's own recipe: apple upside down cake muffins, below.
This year won't only be sweet, it will also be delicious.
1. Apple upside down cake muffins
Pineapple upside down cake takes a walk on the Rosh Hashanah side. It's all about corn muffin mix with some apples and honey in the batter, and a caramel-apple sauce in the bottom of each muffin tin. It's the perfect way to start the first day of the new year.
2. Apple turkey burgers with brie
Grated apples are cooked into a mustard-scented turkey burger, then topped with brie, caramelized onions and more apples. The result is sweet, savory and irresistible. To make this dish kosher, simply nix the cheese and it's approved for even the most observant friend.
3. Sriracha honey lime chicken
Sweet, sticky and spicy. Serve it with creamy mashed potatoes and a simple salad, or eat it standing up at the stove, burning your tongue on an impossibly sticky and juicy drumstick. Just bring the wet naps and a spoon for that extra glaze.
Beets and apples are natural bedfellows in a warming, slightly sweet soup that's both hearty and vegan. Add a dollop of sour cream or plain yogurt when serving and feel free to mix up the spices with cumin, za'atar or ras el hanout for a global twist.
There's nothing wrong with any of these terms, but when you put them all together, it's a symphony. Sweet cinnamon and sugar apples wrapped inside crispy potstickers and fried until golden are only improved by a dip in caramel sauce or honey. Dim sum never looked so sweet.
6. Apple fries
Apples are coated in cornstarch then deep fried quickly until they are tender in the middle with a crunchy crust. They are then doused in cinnamon sugar and eaten plain or with your choice of toppings. It's apples with honey to the max, and that's a good thing.
7. Apple, honey and goat cheese crostini
Honey and apples go upscale with a smear of grassy goat cheese on warm, garlicky toast. It's savory but not aggressive and the drizzle of honey adds a layer of sweet, warm complexity. Add some red pepper flakes if you want to get spicy or serve it with sparkling wine if you want to get feisty.
