In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, many New York and New Jersey residents are unsure about where to cast their ballot on Election Day. The web's got plenty of resources to help, but what if you're among the thousands without power?
If you've got a charged cell phone and a signal, you can call or text the following numbers for the latest info:
In New York, text "NYCVOTES" to 877877. You'll be messaged back with a series of prompts asking for your address, after which you'll get the latest info on your polling place location. Spanish speakers can text "DONDE" to 877877. Alternatively, call the State Board of Elections at 1-855-NYS-SANDY (1-855-697-7263).
In New Jersey, text "WHERE" to 877877 and follow the prompts. Or, call (609) 292-3760.
The text-based polling place locator service was developed by Mobile Commons, a mobile strategy company from Brooklyn, New York. It uses data provided by the Voter Information Project and Google.
"The devastation caused by this storm doesn't have to disrupt our democratic process, and the polling place locator will make it easier for New York City [and New Jersey] voters to find their polling places," said Jed Alpert, CEO of Mobile Commons, in a statement.
If you have an Internet connection, you can also get the latest polling place information through Google.
Note: New Jersey is working with the National Guard to ensure that polling places without power are operational Tuesday. The state is also allowing those voters displaced by the storm to vote via e-mail or fax.
