Snake is about to have a second renaissance.

The simple game of collecting pellets with an ever-moving, ever-growing line that can't double back over itself is set to return next week as Snake Rewind. It's a revamped version that marries the classic gameplay with all sorts of modern-day trappings, like power-ups, an in-game store (of course), social media integration and the titular "rewind" feature, which lets you rewind the snake after crashing.

While Snake has roots that extend back to gaming's formative days in the late '70s, most are familiar with it now thanks to the mobile port created by Taneli Armanto. It was a fixture on Nokia phones after it was introduced in 1998, and is at least partially responsible for kindling the present-day mainstream interest in mobile gaming.

Armanto designed Snake Rewind in a collaboration with the Finnish studio Rumilus Design. It's coming to iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices on May 14. The game is free to download and contains in-app purchases.
