ATTENTION MILLENNIAL WOMEN: They are planning a remake of one of your most influential movies, The Craft. You may now freak out and/or roll your eyes in exasperation.

The current slate of Hollywood remakes is looking pretty shabby, if the Jem and the Holograms and Poltergeist trailers are any indication. However, the newly-announced Craft remake might change all that.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Thursday that Sony has announced plans to make a new version of the 1996 cult classic supernatural thriller about four teenage witches who abuse their powers. The original starred a truly unhinged Fairuza Balk, along with Rachel True, Neve Campbell, and Robin Tunney, who not only showed us the danger of uncontrolled magics but also gave us terrific role models for mid-'90s goth-lite fashion.

While remaking an iconic '90s movie might seem like a desperate move to appeal to millennials, it may actually turn out well for Sony, which hired writer/director Leigh Janiak, who was at the helm of the recent creep-fest Honeymoon which premiered at SXSW 2014 to rave reviews.

Honeymoon starred Game of Thrones wildling Rose Leslie in a twisted take on marriage and women's roles in relationships. The film impressed viewers with both its sophisticated portrayals of gender and with its genuine scares, building the horror on a true-to-life basis of a relationship gone wrong.

The new version of The Craft will have to contend with the dynamics of female friendship, high school castes, and supernatural horror if it is to be a successful remake, and with Janiak at the helm it might actually have a chance at hitting those notes in an authentic, inventive, and terrifying way.

We'll have a chance to see what Janiak can do with another iconic '90s production when she directs an episode of MTV's Scream series, set to debut in October.
