Stephen Colbert Visits Letterman as Himself: 'I'm Going to Do Whatever You've Done'
Stephen Colbert makes his first appearance Tuesday on 'The Late Show With David Letterman' since being named host.

Stephen Colbert -- very much as the man, and not the character -- made his first appearance Tuesday night on the Late Show With David Letterman, his first visit since being named the late-night legend's successor on CBS.

Colbert was deferential in his entrance, opting for a single wave over the self-aggrandizing antics he's come to be known for in nine years of hosting The Colbert Report on Comedy Central as the pseudo-conservative character "Stephen Colbert." He's said that when he comes over to CBS sometime late next year that he'll retire the persona.

CBS made Colbert's succession plan official April 10, just days after Mashable first reported that he was the network's No. 1 choice, and that he wanted the job. On Tuesday he got something of his first tour -- though it's not set in stone that he'll use the same soundstage that Letterman does, it's certainly a strong possibility.

So far, the highlights (above) are all that CBS has released from the appearance. It shows Colbert making his entrance, shaking Dave's hand and taking his seat before joking, "I'm going to do whatever you have done."

"No, you don't want to do that," Letterman said.

"It seems to have gone pretty well, Dave."

"It's gone ... on," Letterman joked.

Letterman had kind words for his successor ... sort of: "They could've just as easily hired a boob like me."

"They hired a boob like me," Colbert shot back. "Every boob is like a snowflake, Dave. We're all unique in our own way."

Later that night, Colbert tweeted:
