Tagworld, the feature-rich MySpace alternative, is making some smart moves. Today they released Tagworld Widgets, a service that aims to increase Tagworld's reach by extending the brand into other social networks - in other words, feeding the MySpace beast (Steve Rubel is calling this "picture in a picture" marketing, which is a nice turn of phrase).

Wisely, Tagworld are also trying to build a developer community around their widgets. Developers can build animations, banners, slideshows, games and more. However, with a bit more tweaking I think the service could become a great branding platform - what if your local music store could instantly build a widget and have it appear in the gallery? Or, for that matter, any brand (big or small) that wants to reach the MySpace demographic. Perhaps this could be the universal blog widget?
