Twitter has launched a new version of its Android app, revamping its interface to match the ones used in its iPhone and web apps.
The entire interface has been redesigned from the ground up. Unlike the old interface, which had a focus on pure simplicity and lacked many of the features available on its iPhone counterpart, the new interface includes a revamped menu bar. It puts the timeline, @mentions, direct messages and additional options like lists, retweets and favorites at the top of the page. Search and Compose are now available on the top right as well.
Twitter has also added the ability to use the app without signing in. This gives users the ability to browse the Twitterverse without the need to sign up, though Twitter has also added that option, too.
Finally, Twitter for Android now includes a universal search function. If a user searches for "cats," he or she will be presented the option to either perform a traditional Twitter search, search only nearby tweets, find people named "cats" or go to the Twitter profile of @cats.
The update brings the app closer to the functionality provided by its iPhone and iPad apps. Twitter got its official iPhone app when it acquired Tweetie last April. The company launched its Android app later that month.
