Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from husband Brad Pitt, her attorney confirmed Tuesday, ending a brief marriage that capped a relationship -- among the highest profile romances Hollywood has ever seen -- spanning more than a decade.

"Angelina has filed for dissolution of the marriage," according to a statement from Robert Offer, Jolie Pitt's entertainment attorney. "This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time."

Jolie is citing the generic "irreconcilable differences," according to TMZ, which first reported the news Tuesday. The site quotes anonymous sources saying the split came over issues with his parenting choices, in particular relating to alcohol and marijuana use. "She does not want Brad to have joint physical custody ... only joint legal custody," TMZ quoted the source as saying.

The two, who have six children together, married in August 2014. They famously first got together in 2004 during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a fling that ended Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston.

In a statement to People, Pitt said, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Pitt and Jolie most recently starred together in By the Sea, which made only $538,000 at the domestic box office last year. Jolie Pitt wrote and directed the melodrama about a couple who are unraveling while on vacation in the south of France.

In happier times, Jolie noted to People in 2014, "We've been through so much. We've gotten a lot closer, which I think naturally happens with raising a family together. You have history. You have so many memories. All your memories are based on time together, so you don't have separate experiences. You have this person you live with who really knows you, and you know them so well. You're not lovers or boyfriend and girlfriend as much as you are a family."

Pitt said of Jolie in 2011, "One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She's such a great mom. Oh, man, I'm so happy to have her."

Here's the divorce papers, dated Sept. 19 and filed in a Los Angeles superior court:
