Being murdered by animals is one of Australia's top national obsessions. Specifically, Aussies enjoy discussing which animal is the best at murdering.
It's not hard to see why. The country is one big, dirt-covered homicide party. That said, it seems Australia's most prolific killers aren't getting the credit they deserve.
According to a new study from the University of Melbourne's Australian Venom Unit, the idea of death by snakes and spiders is more a cliche than an everyday reality.
For example, despite their fearsome reputation, arachnids have accounted for only one death in a 39-year period. Get out of here, you garbage creatures.
And though it's true they look terrifying, snakes rarely do much actual killing. Sometimes they even get knocked off by spiders, which given the abysmal annihilation capabilities of arachnids, is a genuine embarrassment.
Scared of sharks? Don't be. They kill about three people a year. Meanwhile, humans are reportedly killing 100 million of them worldwide annually.
As the university report suggests, it's actually the humble bee that's one of Australia's biggest killers, responsible for the deaths of 27 humans in 13 years.
Then there's Australia's real MVPs: Horses and cows. Over a 10 year period horses, cows and dogs were found to have killed 137 people in Australia.
But given the vast ecological damage Australians cause by exporting and burning coal -- it's fair to say humans are probably country's most deadly creature all up.
But hey, who wants to think about that? Better to load up on scary animal pictures instead. Look, a spider eating a bird!
