Pity the poor urban dwellers who have to cycle home on a sullen grey concrete bike path. If you lived in Auckland, New Zealand, you'd be able to take a far more scenic route.

Designed by Monk Mackenzie Architects, the Nelson St Cycleway project, dubbed the "LightPathAKL," turned 600 metres of unused highway offramp into a bright pink streak through the city.

"The former asphalt highway was given a highly vivid and provocative pink resin and aggregate surfacing," architect Dean Mackenzie said in an emailed statement. "This transformed the space from a disused highway into a highly contemporary urban space used by cyclists and pedestrians."

In the evening, the more than 300 LED light boxes that line the cycleway are turned on, guiding people along the path. Artwork by Maori artist Katz Maih are also built into the western edge of the cycleway barrier.

The bike path opened in December, and has now been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival awards in the transport category.

A flowing, hot pink bike path would certainly improve any commute.
