Chance the Rapper was the best part of the Emmys opening number—and he doesn't even have a TV show

Stephen Colbert's Donald Trump jokes at the 69th Emmys might have been undercut by the presence of one Sean Spicer, but someone else was around to really stick it to the administration in a subtle, clever way.

During the monologue, Colbert unexpectedly handed things off to Chance the Rapper, who expertly mixed political commentary with pop culture in a subversive way only he can pull off.

"I love television, it's a pleasant distraction—but just imagine taking action," the Chicago-born 24 year old said. "I like Brooklyn Nine Nine, in fact I'm addicted. But where's the cop show when one gets convicted?" he rapped, referencing the countless times police officers have gotten off the hook after the killing of black civilians.

"‘M*A*S*H’ rocks, but if Hawkeye can be a soldier, why not Laverne Cox?," he continued, subtly calling out Donald Trump's ban on transgender people from serving in the military. "Bob's Burger make you smile but please don't ignore the decline of the independent family run store." Bodega start-up folks—are you listening?

"Thanks Chance the Rapper for the #emmys2017 shout out last night. Thanks for all those trans folks who want to serve their country openly in the military," Cox wrote on Instagram following the awards.

"I get it, the finales got you focused, but just record the show and show up to the protest," he concluded—and his message rang loud across Twitter, where people expressed their appreciation for the rapper's message.
