'Destiny 2' gives returning players a thoughtful record of their 'Destiny' triumphs
Destiny 2 doesn't have many trinkets to dole out for players who sunk some number of hours into its predecessor, but it does do one very cool thing for returning players.
(If you want to remain completely unspoiled on surprises like this, here's you're chance to turn back.)
Still with me? Good.
When you fire up Destiny 2 for the first time, you're treated to a series of still images. Fittingly dubbed "Memories," they take you on a journey through your accomplishments from the previous game.
(Writers note: This is nice, but it still doesn't make up for my vault of stuff getting blown up.)
Each page features a simple pencil drawing that beckons back to the moment being referenced. In one corner, there's a list of players you completed that task with for the first time and the date you did it.
The gallery ends with the image you see above and a button prompt that lets you "Start a new adventure." You can always go revisit your Destiny journey after the fact from the Destiny 2 character selection screen — It's the little icon right below your list of Guardians.
As disappointing as it was to lose all the loot we'd amassed in the leap from Destiny to Destiny 2, this particular nod at least gets to the heart of what made that original game so popular: the social hang. It's like that worthless treasure twist trope where the real reward was the friends we made along the way ... only here, that math checks out.
Friendships were formed playing Destiny, and in many cases they were meaningful ones. And you know what, that's a pretty OK thing for a video game to pull off.
