'1917' and 'Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood' take top prizes at Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has spoken, and these are the best films of 2019. According to them, at least.

At the Golden Globes Sunday, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood won Best Motion Picture — Comedy, while 1917 claimed Best Motion Picture — Drama.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood beat out Dolemite Is My Name, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, and Rocketman for the honor. Earlier in the evening, the film also nabbed Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Screenplay for Quentin Tarantino.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tarantino had been nominated in the Best Actor and Best Director categories, but lost to Rocketman's Taron Egerton and 1917's Sam Mendes, respectively.

1917 was up against The Irishman, Joker, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes for the Best Picture prize. The film was additionally nominated for Best Original Score but did not win.

Tonight's wins bode well for 1917 and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood in the coming weeks. Although the Golden Globes' actual track record of predicting Oscars is spotty, the ceremony is considered one of the first major stops in the movie awards race.
