Of all the unlikely animal friendships to hit the internet, this one might well be the weirdest and -- considering one member is an inanimate object -- the most unexpectedly heartwarming.

A young Australian horse by the name of Kruzah has developed an unbreakable bond with an unnamed rubber chicken.

Playing with the squeaky toy is Kruzah's favourite way to unwind, with the sprightly one-year-old spending as much of his downtime as possible flipping the plastic piece of poultry all around the place.

It's particularly adorable when you take into account Kruzah was born a "dummy foal." That is, he was starved of oxygen at birth, and has required extensive blood transfusions in order to get up to full health, according to the Daily Mail.

Not that you'd be able to tell by looking at him.

The colt is unbelievably active, as videos uploaded to his owner Debbie Barber's YouTube account attest.

Barber has been astonished by the reception to Kruzah and his chicken mate, writing on Facebook, "We had no idea Kruzah's video would make such an impact and are truly happy he has made so many people smile."

Who knew what the world needed now was not just love, but also a sprightly horse with a rubber chicken?
