Jason Momoa has apologised for a rape joke made at a Comic-Con panel back in 2011, detailed in a video that has surfaced online recently.

The Game of Thrones star, who plays Khal Drogo in the series, commented on the things that he's able to get away with in the science fiction and fantasy genres.

"I love that genre, there's so many things you can do, like rip someone’s tongue out of their throat and get away with it and rape beautiful women," Momoa said.

While the crowd laughed, cast members were visibly embarrassed following the comment.

On Friday morning, Momoa took to Instagram to apologise for his comments.

"I am still severely disappointed in myself at the insensitive of my remarks that day. I know my sincerest apology now won't take away those hurtful words," he wrote.

"Rape and sexual harassment can reach anyone and I have seen first hands its painful torment among members of my own family and friends. I made a truly tasteless comment. It is unacceptable and I sincerely apologize with a heavy heart for the words I said."

All this comes in the midst of sexual harassment and assault accusations against producer Harvey Weinstein, and how these allegations didn't go public for so long, despite apparently being an open secret in Hollywood.
