LG's new phones each come with one specialty

Need a phone with a great camera, or a secondary screen, but don't want to pay a flagship price? LG might have an answer.

Smartphone manufacturers usually have one or two high-end models (often called "flagships"), several mid-range devices, which are just like flagships, only with overall weaker specs, and a few entry-level devices, with far weaker specs but a very affordable price.

Now, LG is trying something different. On Monday, the company announced a new line of "Specialist" smartphones, which have mid-range specifications, but excel in one specific area.

The first two such phones, which will be officially launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (Feb. 22 - 25), are LG X cam and LG X screen.

The X cam is a 5.2-inch Android 6.0 phone with a 1.14GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 2,520mAh battery. Its superpower -- you guessed it -- is in the photo-taking department. The phone comes with two rear cameras -- a 13-megapixel and a 5-megapixel one -- and an 8-megapixel selfie cam on the front.

The 4.93-inch X screen has the same specs, save for a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a 2,300mAH battery, and it lacks the secondary camera on the back. It has, however, got a V10-style secondary 1.76-inch, 520x80 LCD screen, which shows a variety of notifications and lets users answer calls, access frequently used apps and play music.
LG's strategy isn't entirely new -- Nokia, for example, had some mid-range smartphones with great cameras -- but it could be a neat way to get that feature you really want for a sane price (the pricing for these two phones has not yet been announced).

We'll have more details about these devices next week. For now, we know they will arrive in "key markets" in Asia, Europe and Latin America starting next month.
