A hotel in New Zealand is sick and tired of cyclists with lycra shorts. It has said enough is enough.

The Plough Hotel in the rural town of Rangiora has a sign out the front, specifically targeting those on bicycles who are wearing the tight-fitting, synthetic riding gear and hurting eyes everywhere.

"The bicycle is a beautiful object, but they should have never invented lycra!" the sign reads. "No lycra shorts allowed please."

The co-owner of the hotel, Mike Saunders, has put up the sign in an effort to raise dress standards at the establishment. The hotel has started serving breakfast and there are already too many sausages about.

"I am not against Lycra in general, just Lycra shorts. A lot of our customers are elderly or children and they don’t need to know that much detail about the shape of somebody," Saunders told The Guardian.

It's the only item of clothing Saunders wants to see banned, telling the newspaper that locals so far have respected the new dress code.

An ex-employee of Saunders, Siobhan Tolhurst, expressed her support for the ban to The Guardian. She said those wearing lycra shorts stink and their sweat on the furniture is a hygiene issue.

"We had a number of experiences with large men in tiny shorts and that’s not appropriate for children to see," Tolhurst said. To many, that would sound like a regular Saturday night.

Tracy Clark, chairwoman of the Pegasus Cycling Club, told stuff.co.nz the new rule was plain ignorant.

"There's people in New Zealand now who have grown up disconnected from bicycles, have no understanding of what it is to get out there and ride and see the scenery, they are interested in getting in their car and driving place to place," she said.

"I think it's just some ignorance or lack of understanding."

As for non-cyclists in lycra pants, particularly for those in their active wear, active wear, there appears to be no explicit hotel rules against it as yet. Surely it's another worthy enemy?
