Who gets new Gmail? You get new Gmail! And YOU get new Gmail! EVERYBODY GETS NEW GMAIIILLLL!

Ok, it may not be a free new car, but on Monday, Google announced that its massively updated new Gmail would launch to general availability (GA) in July. And by October 2018, new Gmail will be the law of the land, with no option to opt-out.

New Gmail is currently available in an "Early Adopter Program" (EAP) with an option to try it out before the GA. For G-Suite users (that's Gmail's business version), change to new Gmail at this point has to come at the organizational level.

G-Suite users will have more choice in July. Domain owners can choose to migrate everybody or hold off on new Gmail. Or, they can let individuals choose.

But that choice for both G-Suite and GA goes away pretty soon. 8 weeks after the July GA rollout, Gmail will switch its users to new Gmail. We'll retain the option to opt-out for four more weeks. But 12 weeks after the July GA rollout, Gmail users will have to accept new Gmail as their email lord and savior.

Listen, that might sound a touch tyrannical, but new Gmail is pretty darn cool. Many people couldn't wait to try Gmail even before GA (here's a guide to get it right now). So embrace suggested responses, nudging, and self-destructing emails. And welcome new Gmail into your life with (forced) open arms.
