Classic PC game 'The Oregon Trail' is now a card game, too

Because really, who needs a computer just to traipse off into the wilderness and die of dysentery?

Now you can die of dysentery without the need for any fancy computers or smartphones.

Pressman Toy has turned PC gaming classic The Oregon Trail into a new tabletop card game for 2-6 players. Using three different decks of cards, players work together to make the cross-country journey as part of a make-believe covered wagon train.

It sounds like the game can get pretty grim, as resources are limited and everyone wins if just one person survives the whole way. So just like the PC game, you might want to save poor Bobby and two drowning oxen from a flooding river, but doing so would exhaust your supplies.

A new video from Pressman (above) lays out the game's basic rules, which mostly mirror the original game's focus on suffering through the ordeals of cross-country road trips in the early 19th century.

The card game draws from its source in other ways as well. When a player dies, for example, their name is erased from an included dry-erase board and an epitaph is added to their hand-written tombstone.

It looks like a simple, yet clever card game riff on a beloved video game that's been reinvented numerous times since it was popularized with a 1985 release for Apple II. You can buy it now, exclusively from Target.
