Porsche Taycan Turbo gets woefully low EPA mile range

Ouch.

When Porsche unveiled its electric supercar, the Taycan, the company said the Turbo S variant would have approximately 280 miles of range, with the "regular" Turbo trailing close behind with 260 miles of range.

But now the official EPA rating is in, and the number is far, far lower. The EPA says the Porsche Taycan Turbo has just 201 miles of range, which, given the car's fairly large battery – with a capacity of 93.4kWh – makes it a real electricity guzzler.

For comparison, Tesla's Model 3 Long Range has a 76kWh battery and gets an EPA estimated range of 310 miles total, and Tesla Model S Long Range, which has a 100kWh battery, is rated at 370 miles of total range (see comparison below).

According to Jalopnik, Porsche was so unhappy with EPA's rating that it requested an independent test from AMCI Testing, which rated the Taycan Turbo at 275 miles of total range. Unfortunately for Porsche, it's the EPA rating that's official, which makes the Taycan look very inefficient compared to any other electric car out there – despite being one of the priciest.

The Porsche Taycan, with prices ranging from $103,800 to $185,000, is more about performance and less about range. In fact, as The Verge points out, Porsche disables the regenerative braking feature by default and refuses to use certain techniques to get more range out of the Taycan's battery, in order to improve performance. But the lowly EPA rating certainly won't do the Taycan any favors in direct comparisons to its closest competitor, the Tesla Model S.
