With summer slithering to a close, we're inching closer to the gifts of fall. Cool weather brings a slower pace, with cozy days curled up on the couch with a good book. While summer trips may have burned a hole in your wallet, it's time to kick off fall with some savings. Luckily, Amazon's First Reads program is coming in clutch.

With the First Reads program, Amazon Prime members can choose from eight books to receive a free Kindle book. The variety is plentiful; you can choose between a memoir, contemporary fiction, thriller, romance, and more. In addition to your free Kindle book, members receive a free short story. This month's comes from Jane Green, titled When We Were Friends, about a friendship that is not all that it seems. Non-Prime members can buy one of the eight books and the short story for just $1.99 each.

To take advantage of the Amazon First Reads program, sign up for free. Members receive an email at the beginning of each month with the latest drops. And to read your new Kindle book, you don't need a Kindle device (even though we really like Kindles). As long as you have the Kindle app, you can enjoy your free book.

Make the most of your Prime membership, and get a free Kindle book with the First Reads program.
