You want to order from that little pizza place on the other side of town. But all too often it's just too easy to order from Domino's, again.

A new app wants to make sure customers order from those mom-and-pop pizza shops when they reach for their phones.

Slice, a company that tries to connect local pizzerias with customers, launched an iOS app on Thursday. The Grubhub-for-pizza app allows customers to order from nearly any local pizza place without calling or tracking down a menu.

The company says it has signed on more than 6,000 pizzerias nationwide. It has offered online ordering for a while, but is introducing its first mobile app this week.

The app is free to join for pizzerias, which then pay a flat fee per order back to Slice.

“I was astonished to learn that $26 billion of the $40 billion domestic pizza industry is owned by local pizzerias, and yet the vast majority of them still operate the same way they did 50 years ago, untouched by technology,” said Ben Sun, partner at Primary Venture Partners, said in a statement. “Slice is going to have a major impact on the industry, shifting consumption back towards the independents, by extending their network and increasing average order volume all by moving ordering to a mobile app.”

Slice was first founded on Staten Island in 2010 as MyPizza. The company raised $3 million in venture funding, according to Crunchbase.

Slice has many competitors in the food delivery wars, but it's one of the few apps trying to succeed through specificity rather than breadth.

Slice's app is now available in the app store.
