Hot off the announcement that Melbourne will be home to Australia's first surf park, another Australian city is set to follow suit with its very own.

URBNSURF Sydney will be the city's newest wave pool, located in the Olympic Park precinct of the city. For those wondering, it's a fair way away from the beaches the city is well-known for, located in the western suburbs.

The 3.2 hectare site will have an artificial lagoon with Wavegarden technology that can pump out waves as high as 1.7 metres (5.5 feet) for expert surfers, to waves 0.6 metres (1.9 feet) high, ideal for the many beginners out there.

The park is set to cost an estimated A$26.5 million (US$20.27 million), with feasibility studies currently under way. Construction is planned to begin in mid-2017 subject to development approval, with an expected opening in mid- to late-2018.

While it sounds like they're selling ice to the eskimos due to the abundance of great beaches in Sydney, the surf park is slated as an alternative to beach crowds and unappealing surfing conditions that can be a real annoyance.

Not to mention the utterly horrendous parking during the summer.

What's more, with talk of surfing being a potential part of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, it's an ideal spot where one won't need to worry about the danger of other swimmers or surfers being in the way.

We can imagine most will just be happy about the lack of sand being stuck in one's swimmers.
