Reddit users uncovered a bug in Apple's iOS software Monday that causes iPhones to freeze after playing a short, corrupted MP4 file.

The devices crash after about 10 seconds when viewing the video via the default player in iMessage. So, don't text it to your friends (unless you're a jerk).

The problem reportedly only occurs when the video is sent as a link rather transferred as a file, although one Reddit commenter on /r/Apple reported that he received the video as a file on WhatsApp and it also caused his phone to crash.

Mashable tested out the video that causes the bug, and it did indeed crash an iPhone 6S running iOS 10.1.1 when it was sent as a link via iMessage.

The problem appears to not be with iMessage, but how iOS handles corrupted videos.

The bug is similar but not related to another problem that plagued iPhones last year. In that instance, users who received a string of characters via text message saw their iPhones crash and automatically reboot. Apple addressed the issue through a system update.

Until Apple fixes the problem, try not to open any suspicious links sent to your iPhone. If you do click on the video by accident, hold down the power button and the home button at the same time to hard reset your phone.

Mashable has reached out to Apple for comment and will update this post if we hear back.
