Online 'snow day'? Zoom goes down as school year starts.

UPDATE: Aug. 24, 2020, 12:39 p.m. EDT: The issue is now fixed, according to Zoom. Users can once again start and join Zoom Meetings and Webinars.

Zoom has become essential for schools and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

So it's a pretty big deal when the video conferencing service goes down like it did Monday morning.

Users around the world are reporting that Zoom is down. The outage appears to be affecting Zoom's video meetings and webinars.

According to DownDetector, the outage is mostly affecting the U.S. The bulk of complaints about the downtime are located along the East Coast. (Disclosure: DownDetector and Mashable are both owned by the same parent company, Ziff Davis.)

“We have received reports of users being unable to visit the Zoom website (zoom.us) and unable to start and join Zoom Meetings and Webinars,” says the company on its Zoom Status site, which updates users on service issues. “We are currently investigating and will provide updates as we have them.”

Zoom’s most recent update says it has “identified the issue” and is currently working on a fix.

The service has become extremely popular during the coronavirus pandemic. In recent months, Zoom rolled out numerous updates to address data privacy and security issues.

Some users pointed out how with Zoom being down, remote-learning students now have the equivalent of an online "snow day" to look forward to.

That is, at least until Zoom rolls out the fix.
