Maybe Jaws would have ended with a few less casualties if Captain Quint had a bright red broom on board.

Australian man Dan Hoey displayed what could be perceived as either courage or stupidity when he noticed a 5.5 metre (18 feet) great white shark, attempting to gnaw his boat's motor whilst on a fishing trip outside Port Fairy, Australia.

“The shark nearly took a chunk out of my Yamaha motors, leaving a few small dents and scratches,” Hoey told The Herald Sun.

In an attempt to deter the shark, much like a pigeon, Hoey grabbed a garden broom and tried to sweep away the apex predator.

It wasn't until he had returned home and showed his wife the footage that they realised the intensity of the encounter. Hoey's wife Rachel told the newspaper "When Dan came home and showed me the vision I didn’t think too much of it because we are used to seeing sharks, but after watching the video a couple of times it’s only just hit me how full on it was."
