From the first steps to the leap forward, Mashable commemorates the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with a series(opens in a new tab) that examines its significance — and why we haven’t been back.

This weekend marks 50 years since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon.

To celebrate the Apollo 11 mission, 300 Shooting Star drones from Intel took to the sky Tuesday night at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The remote-controlled lightweight drones used LED lights to create billions of color combinations while flying to music from Duran Duran.

The drones previously performed at the Super Bowl, Phish concerts, and the Winter Olympics. Tuesday's show was in collaboration with the artist collective Studio Drift.
