'How is that OK?': Stephen Colbert rips Republicans' promise to side with Trump in impeachment trial

Apparently emboldened by just how much Trump keeps getting away with, senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham have plainly declared they'll do all they can to ensure the impeachment trial is decided in his favor. Which, Late Show host Stephen Colbert pointed out on Monday, is a complete violation of their constitutional duty to be impartial.

"That's like one of the jurors standing up at the beginning of a trial and saying, 'Your Honor, we think the defendant is a really good guy, and we're going to be coordinating with him throughout the trial,'" said Colbert. "'We'd also like to give him his knife back — there you go, Jack, keep on rippin' brother.'"

It seems Republicans aren't even pretending to be fair anymore, assuming they ever did. Though the House Judiciary Committee approved both articles of impeachment against Trump, the vote was "along strictly partisan lines."

"That's right! Not one Republican evidently has a problem with the president blackmailing a foreign government to get dirt on a political opponent," said Colbert. "In a related story, the GOP has changed its mascot from an elephant to an ostrich [with its head in the sand]."
