How did J.R.R. Tolkien come up with Middle-earth and his stories of hobbits and fellowships and rings?

Tolkien is set to explore that, taking a look at the author's younger years growing up as an orphan and forming a "fellowship" with his friends, and then having those bonds tested with the start of World War I.

From the look of this minute-long trailer, the movie blends fantasy and reality as it dreams up the influence those real-life experiences had on the creation of Middle-earth.

Tolkien, starring Nicholas Hoult, hits theaters on May 10.
