LONDON -- On Dec. 13, One Direction performed its final live show before starting its hiatus. Traumatised teens everywhere tuned into The X Factor live finals, where 1D proved that there really is no feat more emotional than ending the first chapter back where it all began.

After the group announced its break back in August, Directioners have been on tenterhooks, ticking off each of the band's final movements as they happened. It all came to a conclusion at The SSE Arena in Wembley, UK this weekend.

The night began with a performance of 1D's new single, "Infinity", and there were a lot of disco balls.

The boys also performed Made In The A.M. track "History," appropriately accompanied by a montage of all their best moments from the last five years (Zayn included). Warning: emotional content.

The band shared a warm embrace, providing the most poignant moment of the evening -- or of life so far, depending on how seriously you take 1D.

Wipe those glistening tears from your cheeks.

If that's not enough to shatter your heart into a thousand tiny pieces, 1D's goodbye performance included messages from the band's famous fans, including Danny DeVito (who worked with the band on the "Steal My Girl" video), David Beckham and 5 Seconds of Summer. Simon Cowell also says that he'll "always be here" for them, which is nice.

Over on Twitter, Harry Styles shared some words of thanks with fans, taking inspiration from "History" to call them the "greatest teammates [One Direction] have ever known."

To you, you have changed our lives and no words will ever be good enough to thank you for what we have done together.— Harry Styles. (@Harry_Styles) December 14, 2015

You are the greatest team mates we have ever known. Thank you.— Harry Styles. (@Harry_Styles) December 14, 2015

He also wore yet another fantastic suit.

Meanwhile, Louis Tomlinson assured Directioners that the band would be back soon enough.

Well that was an emotional night !! Never can we thank you enough for how special you have made the last five years for us!— Louis Tomlinson (@Louis_Tomlinson) December 14, 2015

I hope you realise what we have all done together really is incredible. You guys have made us what we are today! We'll be back soon enough!— Louis Tomlinson (@Louis_Tomlinson) December 14, 2015

All four members came together to record this message, in which Liam Payne continues his reign as the most media-trained band member while dropping a truly inspiring metaphor about 1D's career so far.

Considering the gravity of the event, it comes as no surprise that millions of Directioners took to Twitter to profess their simultaneous heartbreak and love.
