Koala and dog stuck down an abandoned mineshaft get rescued

Safe now.

It might sound like a tired trope from a '70s television show, but somehow this koala and dog got trapped at the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft.

Yes, these things still really do happen. The mine, located in Ipswich, Australia, was attended to by firefighters and the RSPCA on Monday after yelps from the dog were heard.

Lance Mullins from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service told 9 News the rescue was "an unusual one," and that staff deemed it was too unsafe to send anyone down the hole.

Rescuers had to use large animal bag and ropes to fetch the pair out. The dog made it out okay --taken straight to the vet with a slight limp -- but RSPCA staff had trouble fetching the koala, who they thought was blind.

"It didn't want to cooperate real well," Mullins told the news outlet.

After an hour of little success, the koala was forcibly trapped with a net and brought back up to the surface.

It was taken to a wildlife hospital and RSPCA spokesperson Michael Beatty told the Queensland Times its poor vision might've led to its fall down the hole.

"There are no broken bones but it has some eyesight issues," he told the news outlet. "The koala has very bad conjunctivitis and cystitis, which is why it may have fallen down the hole in the first place."
