Ruby Roman grapes are native to the Ishikawa prefecture and have a high sugar content level of over 18 percent. In order to meet its high quality standards, each grape in the bunch needs to weigh at least over 20 grams before it can be sold.

According to The Japan Times, The record-breaking auction took place at a wholesale market in Ishikawa's Kanazawa district. Last year's record was set at 1 million yen ($9,965) for a bunch of Ruby Romans.

Konishi is old hat at the pricey fruit game. He made headlines in May for forking out 3 million yen ($29,885) for a pair of Yubari melons at a Sapporo auction.
