Mahershala Ali used to be a rapper and of course he's very good

In wonderfully predictable news: Mahershala Ali is good at everything.

The Oscar-winning actor has hit a superstar stride in 2017, crushing roles in Hidden Figures, Marvel's Luke Cage series and, of course, Moonlight.

Before all of his on-screen success and Calvin Klein campaigns, the Academy Award winner tried his hand at something a little different: rap.

After earning his masters degree in acting from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, the actor began rapping under the name Prince Ali.

"Bay Area rhymesayer Prince Ali's verbal assault combines a flaunting, B-boy-like swagger with nuances of spirituality, a strong implication of his Souls of Mischief Influence," his iTunes artist biography reads.

"Ali was inspired to be an MC in the mid-'80s by the king B-boys of hip-hop, Run-D.M.C." it continues.

While pursuing rap, Ali founded Eye5 Recordings, and released his underground mixtape Corner Ensemble in 2006.

The project was later picked up by Hiero Emporium, a label founded by Oakland hip-hop crew Hieroglyphics. Under that label, Mahershala also released Curb Side Service in 2007.
