'Rick and Morty' creator may or may not have tried to sell McDonald's Mulan Szechuan Dipping Sauce on eBay

What at first looked like your average run-of-the-mill way-too-f*cking-expensive-because-it's-a-joke eBay auction has since become shrouded in mystery, but we'll start at the beginning -- the surprise premiere of Rick and Morty.

On Sunday evening, a listing for "1998 McDonalds Mulan Szechuan McNugget Dipping Sauce" went up on eBay after the Season 3 premiere of cult phenomenon Rick and Morty aired on Adult Swim's website on April 1. (The listing has since been taken down.)

Post that episode, everyone cared a lot about the sauce, which McDonald's briefly served during the release of Disney's Mulan.

The sauce listing was from seller definitelynotdanharmon which led a lot of people to immediately assume that, yeah, it was being sold by Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon.

The item description clarified that "you are bidding on an authentic autographed photograph of that Mmmulan McMcMcNugget sauce, printed shoddily on plain paper and sent in an ordinary USPS stamped envelope. You will also receive a complimentary sense of generalized bamboozlement for having the poor judgment to spend good money on this particular auction."

Sooo, not a sauce at all. A picture. Sent by possibly Dan Harmon, possibly not. The description also stated: "There may or may not be other things that happen to you because you win this auction," as well as "ALL OTHER PICTURES OF THAT MULAN DIPPING SAUCE ON EBAY ARE SCAMS! WE CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT THEY ARE AUTHENTICALLY AUTOGRAPHED BY SOMEONE WHO IS DEFINITELY NOT DAN HARMON!"

After 82 bids, the picture was going for $99,100, presumably driven at least in part by the looming possibility that Dan Harmon was behind it all and maybe the winner would be greatly rewarded for their commitment to the bit.

Looking closer into definitelynotdanharmon's eBay account, which was created in 2005 (pretty far back to be referencing Dan Harmon at all unless you are, in fact, Dan Harmon), has two past sales: one of which is an LCD screen panel replacement, the other a Bitcoin miner.

Past purchases include one of those dangling carseat signs for Uber/Lyft drivers (a prop?), some laptop parts (is Dan Harmon a tinkerer?), and something from Goodwill Southern California.

So, inconclusive at best. If you're just looking for that sweet sweet McDonald's Mulan Szechuan McNugget Dipping Sauce, here's some more affordable options courtesy of a list by someone who's maybe Dan Harmon.
