Creepy, but a great protein source.

You might expect to see a spider in your garage or lurking in the back of a garden, but probably not in a box of cookies. Right?

ALDI in the U.S. is investigating a customer's complaint after a spider was apparently found baked into a vanilla wafer cookie purchased from a store in Lindenhurst, N.Y.

Eric Sowa told ABC7 Chicago that he had purchased the box of cookies for his 9-year-old daughter last Thursday when she wanted an after-school treat.

When Sowa's wife complained to ALDI headquarters, they were offered a $5 coupon and told they would be contacted by the manufacturer for their trouble. That's been labelled "laughable" by Sowa, who hadn't been contacted by the company as of Monday.

Mashable has reached out to ALDI for comment, but the grocery chain has already issued a statement to ABC7 Chicago, labelling it an "isolated incident."

"At ALDI, we take the safety and integrity of the products we sell very seriously. That's why every private-label food product we sell comes with the ALDI Double Guarantee, which means we will replace the product and refund the purchase price of any ALDI food product if a customer is not 100 percent satisfied," the company said.

"Our understanding is that this is an isolated incident and our supplier has reached out to the customer to investigate the matter further. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused."

If it's any consolation for this family (and probably not much of one), it's well known that eating insects is actually quite good for you, and the environment too.
