Skiing, snowboarding, wingsuiting and paragliding.

These are the four key components of Ubisoft's newly announced action sports game, Steep. You can switch between them at any time, and opt to take it all in from either a first-person or third-person perspective.

It all plays out against the backdrop of the Alps, where towering rock faces and snowy wastes create a gorgeous natural playground for thrill-seekers to explore. Steep is all about social play; it's an online-only game that lets you go anywhere, trick off anything and document every moment for the world to see.

The game comes from Ubisoft's Annecy studio, and it's the first that team has led development on. Blockbuster games from Ubisoft are often all-hands (or many-hands) projects that incorporate multiple studios, and Annecy in particular specializes in multiplayer creations.

Steep has been in development for two and a half years, and some of the inspiration for it comes from the unlikeliest of places: a military action game.

Ubisoft's upcoming Ghost Recon: Wildlands sets players loose in an intricately detailed recreation of Colombia. It's a cooperative game for four players that focuses on combat, but the diverse environments got Annecy thinking: What if players could turn that into a different kind of playground?

Steep focuses heavily on exploration, giving players the freedom -- with help from a freecam feature -- to scout out the terrain ahead and plot their path. There are structured activities, of course, but there's also an emphasis on creating your own runs and then challenging friends and strangers alike to replicate those feats.

Steep will be out this Dec., 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
