When you’re a kid, you shouldn’t have to worry about much.

“What time is recess? Can I sit next to my friend at story time? Why is the sky blue?”

These are the kinds of questions kids should ask. “Where will I sleep tonight?” shouldn’t be one of them.

The average age of a homeless person in the United States is just 9 years old. It’s a startling fact and one that many are actively working to make a thing of the past.

In the video above, we meet Charles Evans, an educator and the regional director of School on Wheels, an organization that works to provide shelter and educational support for homeless children across the country.

“My dream is to help kids on the streets realize their true potential,” Evans says. “More importantly, we give the kids hope.”

You could say Evans is a champion for the kids he helps -- building them up and helping them to believe in themselves. While hanging out one afternoon during a homework help session, Evans and the kids got a big surprise when a trio of athletes – champions of another kind – paid a visit.

Watch above as Derek Jeter, Kevin Durant and JJ Watt stop by to drop off school supplies, help out with fractions and read stories to the kids.

As Evans says, “That’s something these kids are going to remember for a lifetime.”

Every dream deserves a champion.
