Over the Holidays we’re all accustomed to getting a little emotional. As a time for celebrating and reflecting on the past year, the Holidays is special to each and every one of us for different reasons. Of course, having the opportunity to celebrate the Holidays with loved ones is something not everyone has a chance at, and Thai Life Insurance’s latest short film “Opportunity” is sure to speak to those who have struggled to create opportunity in times of darkness.

But what does opportunity mean? This is the burning question that lies at the centre of “Opportunity”.

At the core of Thai Life is a stringent belief in the “value of life”, and this short film focuses on the everyday hero overcoming adversity, seizing their own opportunities and creating opportunity for those less fortunate and for those whose struggle we know. It’s an emotional journey, beginning with the presentation of the question: “How do opportunities arise?”

Our hero – an everyday Thai lady – is posed the above question at a job interview, and from here the short film uses a dual narrative to display the very different ways opportunity is weaved into her life.

In the first instance, we learn that she is a self-made woman and created her own opportunities in life by “looking sharp”, “having ability”, “diligence” and “attentiveness”. It’s these attributes that bring her to the job interview, but the emotion of the film comes from the backstory of our hero creating her own opportunities, beating the odds and overcoming life’s difficulties.

Opportunity for many is the chance to create opportunities for others, and it’s an emotional journey when we see how the film’s main character has learnt first-hand how to appreciate the value of life and use her own experiences to better the lives of others. After being left homeless and losing her child, she is left desolate and alone on the streets. Her moment of realisation comes when she sees another woman with her sickly child living in the same situation - she rallies and creates her own opportunity to help others, joining a life insurance firm and ultimately saving the life of a young child through her work.

What does opportunity mean, then? Considering the lack of opportunities given to others and using your own will and strength to create a brighter future for them. Being human and using your own weaknesses and tragedies to better the lives of those destined to follow the same path. Watch the film above and see opportunity in action – but be sure to have some tissues on hand for the journey.
