On this date in 1983, Trey Anastasio got together with some friends and formed a little band called Phish.
The band is often thought of as a modern-day Grateful Dead due to its penchant for impressively long shows that feature extended passages of improvised jamming and its cult-like following of fans who travel around the country to follow the band on tour.
Impressively, the band is still going strong today, 30 years after the band played its first gig in a University of Vermont cafeteria. The quartet continues to headline music festivals and give all-night concerts on holidays like Halloween and New Year's Eve.
