Microsoft's aggressive overhaul of its world-dominating operating system, Windows 8, is apparently off to a strong start with, according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, 4 million Windows users upgrading to the new OS since the launch late last week.

Speaking at the company's annual Build developer conference, Ballmer also reported that Microsoft has delivered Windows 8 to "tens of millions of OEMs" (original equipment manufacturers). During last week's launch event, Mashable saw dozens of new PCs from Dell, HP, Asus, Acer and others running the Start-button-free platform.

Microsoft's early Windows 8 success more or less mirrors that of its primary competition, Apple OSX Lion. That update shipped last summer and within the space of four days, Apple reported 3 million downloads.
