Get Real-Time Transit Schedules When You Check In on Foursquare [APPS]

We came across a useful Foursquare add-on recently that delivers real-time public transit schedules via SMS when connected users check in near a transit stop on Foursquare.

The add-on, 4sqtransit, was built by college student and software developer Matt McCormick.

We tested it out at the 6 train stop near Mashable HQ in New York and found that it was accurate to the minute. (It listed incorrect hours, but that didn't affect the experience much.)

To try it out yourself, simply:

Visit 4sqtransit.com.

Select your transit agency from the list.

Log in with your Foursquare account.

Authorize 4sqtransit to access your Foursquare checkin data.

And that's it. The next time you check in within 100 meters of a transit stop, you'll receive a text message detailing the scheduled arrivals of the next few trains.
