The 2012 presidential campaign and election will (at least in theory) conclude on Tuesday night, ending a months-long advertising war between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Like the Iowa caucuses and party conventions, a deluge of TV advertising is one of the hallmarks of every presidential election cycle. Some spots overtly build up one candidate, while others overtly tear one down; all spots, implicitly, do both.

TV ads have been a major part of presidential politics for decades now, and the exquisitely edited YouTube video above shows that -- to borrow the phrase -- the more things change, the more they stay the same. It combines some of the most notable ads of the past 60 years -- starting with 1952's iconic "I Like Ike" ad -- to provide a mesmerizing lesson in politics, branding and advertising.
