The Internet may love its cats, but the second longest-running sport in the U.S. favors the feline's slobbery counterpart.

In its 139th year, the Westminster Dog Show celebrates the sport of purebred dogs. To celebrate man's best friend, we gathered facts on breeds from each letter of the alphabet. (Minus "Q," because there aren't any.)

While spectators can enjoy the dogs from afar, dog lovers know that these furry family members were made for play and cuddles. New Yorkers can get up close and personal with 200 different types of breeds thanks to the American Kennel Club, which is teaming up with WKC this year to host its Meet the Breeds event on Feb. 14 -- because what's a better Valentine's Day date than petting pups?

Mashable will cover Westminster Week, but in the meantime, school yourself on some of the popular breeds.
