ABC might be feeling some doubt about its newest comedy.

Selfie, which stars Doctor Who alum Karen Gillan, is about a social media obsessive who tries to reform her shallow image. The sitcom debuted to just 4.9 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in the key 18-49 demographic -- down 55% percent from last year's debut of family sitcom The Goldbergs.

Fellow freshman comedy Manhattan Love Story didn't deliver either, with 4.3 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic. Such weak numbers seemed to have a knock-on effect on the second episode of Marvel's Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., which fell to 4.5 million viewers despite strong reviews.

Hopes had been high for Gillan's first foray into television in the United States, especially since her career was boosted by an appearance in this summer's mega hit Guardians of the Galaxy. But a cloud of critical disdain seemed to hang over it.

Time will tell whether audiences give Selfie the three-episode test (the amount usually required to determine if a sitcom is worth watching). but in the meantime, its 8 p.m. time slot features some tough competition.

The second episode of NCIS drew 18.6 million viewers first in viewers and a 2.6 rating and The Voice grabbed 13.5 million viewers with a 4.0 rating. Over on Fox, the news continued to be bleak for reality show Utopia, which notched 2 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
